Yooralla Society of Victoria

Technologies for Education and Training for People with Disabilities in Local, Rural and Metropolitan Communities.

Amount Granted   $22,500
Grant Awarded   02/05/2006
Project Completed   31/05/2007

Yooralla developed this project in order to set up a mobile laboratory of computers equipped with specialised equipment, allowing 5-15 participants to be trained simultaneously on the use and application of specialised technology for people with disabilities.

Specialised assistive technology within the labs included programmable software, alternate keyboards and mouse options, electric and non-electric communication equipment all of which provide people with disabilities with the means to participate actively in the daily functional, leisure and social aspects of life.

Assistive technology is generally highly specialised. Learning to operate the equipment, particularly to customise in order to meet individual needs, requires training.

Funding from the Telematics Trust provided Yooralla with the opportunity to expand its ComTEC education program in order to provide hands on assistive technology training and education that could be customised to meet the needs of specific individual environments and communities.

Some of the training and equipment provided within the project included:

Switches to Success: (Training and Equipment)
Used to customise skill development activities for children who need to use a switch for computer / communication access.

Choose and Tell Legends: (Training)
Provided demonstration and trail of switch/touch screen/mouse software for older learners by group participants.

Cause and Effect Variety Bundle: (Training)
The provision of training in software designed for touch screen use. Participants learnt how to set up customisable features to meet individual learning needs.

The Sustainability Hub

Web based leaning forum for the Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies (CERES).

Amount Granted   $25,000
Grant Awarded   26/05/2005
Project Completed   06/12/2006

The Sustainability Hub pilot project was developed to provide a web-based learning forum for students to assess their school’s sustainability, compare their school with others and develop ideas for improving their school’s sustainability.

A grant of $25,000 was provided by the Telematics Trust to CERES in November 2004. Throughout the early period of 2005, CERES developed the website and spoke with schools.

In July 2005 the site went live and delivery of the project to a small group of pilot schools began. Feedback was provided by initial pilot schools.

A close collaboration in the project was essential between CERES staff and their Web Designer (Capsule Pty Ltd). This relationship, achieved through frequent meetings and a rigorous drafting procedure, ensured the needs and concerns of schools, teachers and students were continually considered.
